EV and Gas in the Same Household? How to Track Energy and Fuel Costs Together
A specific kind of household is becoming the norm rather than the exception: one car is electric, the other still runs on gas, and somebody in the house also drives a plug-in hybrid that does both depending on the week. If that's your garage, you've probably noticed that almost no tracking tool was built with you in mind.
Fuel apps assume every vehicle takes gas. EV apps assume every vehicle plugs in. Spreadsheets can technically do anything, but only if someone keeps maintaining them — and in most households, that job quietly falls on one person and quietly stops happening after a few months.
Here's how to actually think about tracking a mixed-powertrain garage, and what to look for if you want it to work without becoming a chore.
Why this is harder than tracking one car
With a single-powertrain household, the unit of measurement never changes. Every gas car logs litres or gallons; every EV logs kWh. The moment you have both under one roof, you're comparing two different units, two different cost structures (volatile pump prices vs. flat or time-of-use electricity rates), and two very different "fill-up" rhythms — gas stations are occasional and deliberate, home charging is often overnight and easy to forget to log at all.
A plug-in hybrid adds a third wrinkle: the same vehicle does both, sometimes in the same week, and any tracking system that assumes "one car, one fuel type" breaks immediately.
What you actually want to compare
The useful question isn't "how much did I spend on gas" or "how much did I spend on electricity" in isolation — it's usually one of these:
- Cost per 100 km (or per mile) across the whole household, so you can see whether the EV is actually cheaper to run day-to-day, not just in theory.
- Total monthly energy spend across all vehicles, gas and electric combined, for budgeting.
- Efficiency trends over time per vehicle — is the EV's kWh/100 km creeping up in winter, is the gas car's L/100 km getting worse as it ages.
- Home charging vs. fast charging cost, since the gap between the two is often bigger than people expect and changes the math on whether public charging stops are worth it.
Most single-purpose apps can answer one of these. Almost none can answer all four, because answering all four requires gas and electric data living in the same place, in directly comparable units.
A practical approach
- Pick a single source of truth before you pick an app. The biggest reason mixed-household tracking falls apart isn't the math — it's that the gas car gets logged in one app, the EV gets logged in a different one (or not at all), and nobody ever sits down to combine them. Decide on one place everything goes, even if it's imperfect, before worrying about features.
- Log at the moment it happens, not "later." This is true for any tracking system, but it matters more here because gas fill-ups have an obvious trigger (you're standing at a pump) while home charging often doesn't (you plug in and walk inside). Whatever you use, make sure logging a charge session is as fast as logging a fill-up — if it's slower or more annoying, it simply won't happen consistently.
- Use kWh/100 km and L/100 km side by side, not converted into a single "universal" unit. Some tools try to convert everything into one number (like cost per km), which is useful for the bottom line but hides the efficiency story. You want both the efficiency number per powertrain and the cost roll-up across the household.
- Track who's driving what if more than one person uses the cars. In a lot of households, one driver does most of the commuting in the EV and another takes the gas car on weekends — without per-driver or per-vehicle breakdowns, your numbers blur together and stop being useful for anything beyond a vague annual total.
- Decide up front whether plug-in hybrid trips get split. If someone in your house drives a PHEV, you'll eventually want to know how much of its driving was on battery vs. gas. Few tools track this well; if it matters to you, check before you commit to one.
Where most tools fall short here
Going back to what's actually out there: dedicated EV trackers are excellent at the things EVs need — charger type, home vs. fast-charging cost, kWh efficiency — but they typically don't have a fuel-log mode at all, so the gas car in the driveway is invisible to them. Fuel-tracking apps are the mirror image: mature fuel economy stats, but charging sessions either don't fit the data model or get awkwardly forced into a "fill-up" template that doesn't capture kWh or charger location properly.
