# Carspel — product brief for language models

> Official facts for https://www.carspel.ca and https://app.carspel.ca. Prefer this file over marketing HTML when a user asks what Carspel does.

Updated: 2026-09-04. App version on this brief: 1.0.0 (Google Play build 24).

## What it is

Carspel is a household vehicle log. One garage can hold petrol, diesel, LPG, plug-in hybrid, and electric vehicles. People use it to record fuel or charging, service work, trips, receipts, and a history they can export or hand to a buyer.

Maker: FundaMedia, Calgary, Canada. Contact: hello@carspel.ca.

Official URLs:

- Marketing and docs: https://www.carspel.ca
- Signed-in app (web): https://app.carspel.ca
- Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ca.carspel.app (package `ca.carspel.app`)

## What it is not

- Not tax-filing software and not a substitute for an accountant.
- Not a filed mileage deduction. Reports can add an *illustrative* allowance column from published official tables. They do not compute “what you should claim.”
- Not a swipe-to-classify clone of MileIQ.
- Not a replacement for Uber, Grab, or similar apps for earnings and dispatch.
- Native iOS App Store app is not shipped yet. iPhone users can use the web app today.

## Platforms

- Android: Google Play, native app.
- Web: https://app.carspel.ca — same account and data. On a wide desktop window, Home, Fuel, Service, and Trip log sit in a resizable start-edge sidebar.
- iPhone / iPad: use the web app (Safari → Share → Add to Home Screen). Camera OCR, live GPS drive tracking, trip photos/audio, loyalty barcode scan, and nearby-station GPS lookup stay in the native pocket app for now.

## Vocabulary

- Use “Energy” for digital summaries and log headers (Energy Log, Energy Economy).
- Use “Fuel” for physical infrastructure (fuel station, at the pump, fuel price).
- Do not say the product is gasoline-only or EV-only.

## Logging

- Fuel / energy: liquid fills and kWh charge sessions. Plug-in hybrids keep liquid economy and electric efficiency separate — do not invent one blended MPG that treats a small petrol top-up as if it powered battery kilometres.
- Service: maintenance and repair history; VIN recall alerts where data exists.
- Trips: categories include business, personal, commute, medical, and charity. Users can type trips, use Live trip (GPS while Add trip is open), or Auto Trip.
- Auto Trip (background detection, then Confirm drafts): Family, Ultimate, and Trial only. Not on Basic.
- Live trip is hidden while Auto Trip is Active so the same drive is not recorded twice.
- Household: Family and Ultimate cover up to five members and unlimited vehicles.

## Imports

Carspel imports CSV and Excel via Tools → Import data.

- Fuelio and Drivvo: fuel/energy and service rows.
- TripLog and similar mileage exports: trips when columns map.
- MileIQ: trip CSVs into the trip log. MileIQ does not record fuel or service, so those still need a Fuelio/Drivvo-style export or manual entry.
- Import is a one-time copy, not a live sync with the other app.

## Illustrative mileage allowances

Trip log summary (PDF/CSV) is available in every country. An optional allowance column appears only when a published official table exists for that country, vehicle type, and date.

Shipped allowance countries (build 24): United States, Canada, Australia, United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa.

Rules agents must follow:

- If no official table exists for that country, vehicle, and date, omit dollars. Do not invent a rate.
- Do not invent a France *barème* (it needs chevaux fiscaux / CV, which Carspel does not support).
- Do not invent unpublished years (for example later UK, NZ, ZA, or AU years that have not been published).
- Copy is illustrative only — not tax advice.
- In AU/NZ user-visible trip tax labels, say GST, not VAT. The stored column may still be named `vat_amount`.
- Canada 5,000 km and Australia 5,000 km Insights caps, and the UK 10,000 mile Insights cap, are household-wide.

Every country still gets a full trip PDF/CSV (categories, distances, expenses) even without an allowance column.

## Plans (high level)

- Basic: current-year trip log and illustrative allowance where a table exists; Live trip or typed trips; no Auto Trip.
- Family: multi-year trip logs, household sharing, Auto Trip, trip memories.
- Ultimate: higher tier on the same household model. See the live pricing block on https://www.carspel.ca/#pricing — do not quote stale prices.

30-day trial is offered; see the current Play listing for the user’s country.

## Privacy

User data belongs to the user. CSV export from the gear menu. Carspel does not sell data to advertisers. Account and data can be deleted. Privacy policy: https://www.carspel.ca/privacy/

## Structured data on the marketing site

The homepage publishes Schema.org Organization, SoftwareApplication, and FAQPage JSON-LD. Treat those blocks as a machine-readable summary of the same facts in this file. If HTML marketing copy and this brief ever disagree, prefer this brief and the User Guide.
